Childhood/Early Life
Anne Frank was born on June 12, 1929 at a small hospital on the outskirts of a small town called Frankfurt in Germany. She was the second little girl to be born in the Frank family, because there was already a three and a half year old toddling around the house. Her name was Margot, and her and Anne grew up to be great friends and sisters. Anne was born as Annelies Marie Frank, but her family shortened her first name to Anne.
When Anne was just about four years old, Adolf Hitler became chancellor, or ruler of Germany. Anne was Jewish, and let me tell you, he had it set out for Jewish people! He would write the Jewish star (the Star of David) on businesses or houses owned or run by Jewish people. Hitler made it quite clear that Jewish wasn't a religion to be or to be in contact with Jewish people. He wanted to wipe out the Jewish religion. He thought that only people with blond hair and blue eyes were the pure ones. Soon after Hitler took power, Margot got a letter saying that she needed to attend a Jewish work camp. This told Otto and Edith that they didn't want to risk losing their family, so they moved to Amsterdam.
Everything in Amsterdam was going great.Otto was running a small, but successful company, Anne and Margot were beginning schooling, and everyone felt free of the Nazi army. Everything was perfect.
Until Hitler invaded Poland and the Netherlands in search of more power. Anne and her family then went into hiding in a small, hidden apartment behind Otto's office. Anne called it the secret annex. Anne then picked up her diary more and more until it became a daily thing.
Soon after going into hiding, the family was joined by Otto's business partner, and his wife and son, Peter. About 2-3 other Jews from Otto's workplace joined them. It was VERY crowded. People in the annex would sneak out to smuggle food, water, and necessities, and other things absolutely needed.
The Franks and others successfully stayed hidden for just over 2 years, but sadly were discovered and captured by the Gestapo, or the secret German police. Though the person who tipped off the Frank family remained anonymous, it is said that he was the stock breaker who worked for the Frank's business. The Franks were then split up, and little did they know that they'd never see each other again.
Anne and Margot were sentenced to immediate death. In January of 1945, Edith Frank passed away from starvation. Anne and Margot died about two months after their mother, and only a few days away from each other in early March due to Typhus.
